Outline of the reserach:

Asian economies have rapidly intensified their economic cooperation since the Asian crisis in 1997. Many bilateral, multi-lateral FTA and Economic Partnership Arrangements have been concluded. In regard with cooperation in international financial markets, many ideas such as Asian Bonds have been discussed in international circles. The objective of this project is to find out what kinds of economic partnership will bring the maximum efficiency via market mechanism, and what effects the arrangement will bring to each Asian country. More concretely, we try to clarify the impacts of and on IT cooperation, competitiveness of China and ASEAN, globalization and local economy, production linkage, MNEs, SMEs, local industries, and so on.  The speed of FTA development is much faster than academic achievement. Realizing the gap, we foster exchanges of views based on our research and try to enhance our understanding from an independent view from any government. In this project, we try to contribute to form a public opinion in this area.

Following our research activities in the fiscal year 2004, we intensify further our network among researchers, particularly among counterparts. For example, Abe, Urata, and Kohsaka will focus our research on the development of FTA in Asia in cooperation with Suthiphand while the Thai side coordinator, Bhanupong, will advance the study on macro impacts of FTAs in Asia in cooperation with Abe, Kohsaka, and Fujita. Chalongphob and Chaiwoot team up with Ezaki and Abe to deal with CGE modeling and FTA in general. Srawooth and Abe will further study the social impacts of FTA. Thangaveru and Abe will engage in the study of "the role of Singapore in FTA age," and "Aging and FTA." Mahani will join Negishi and Okamoto to advance the study of FDI and international organizations’ role in economic partnership.

Interim reports are expected and to be uploaded to the web site. At the same time we will organize seminars to invite comments and suggestions to our ongoing research both abroad and at home.
