For many years, Cambodia has been marginalized in terms of academic exchanges in Southeast Asia. From the 1990s, however, the restoration of educational institutes advanced, graduate school education beginning from the 2000s. The Royal University of Phnom Penh is a university that has been at the forefront of this progress. A master’s program in development studies was established in 2006, and the Faculty of Development Studies was opened in 2013. The faculty comprises 42 members, including young scholars who have gained master’s or doctorate degrees in Japan, Australia and other countries, thus forming the core of Cambodia’s social science research community. - Thailand: Institute of Asian Studies, Chulalongkorn University
The first to establish a Southeast Asia Studies course at the undergraduate level, Chulalongkorn University has endeavored to nurture human resources in Thai society that have specialist knowledge on neighboring countries. The Institute of Asian Studies has played an important role in this effort. The master’s course in Southeast Asia Studies was established more than 15 years ago and has been active in nurturing of young researchers in Southeast Asian studies. Since global interest in ASEAN has risen, even greater expectation is being placed on its intensive researches on Southeast Asia through collaborative relations with foreign institutes like the Center for Southeast Asian Studies at Kyoto University. - Myanmar: Department of International Relations, University of Yangon
The University of Yangon has been expanding its international network on the basis of the liberalization that began in 2011. The Department of International Relations has become the main counterpart for The International Center of Excellence at Yangon University, established between the U.S. Johns Hopkins University and Yangon University. American teaching staff are lecturing in international relations at the International Center, which emphasizes the nurturing of students and young researchers. The ASEAN Ministers of Education Organization Regional Centre for History and Tradition (SEAMEO-CHAT), one of the foremost centers for the nurturing of international academic exchanges in Myanmar, has been holding a seminar for young international researchers titled “The Myanmar History from Myanmar Perspectives Programme” every year since 2002.
