The Graduate School of Asian and African Area Studies was established in April 1998 in order to respond to changing social demands on academia. There are four important characteristics. First, it promotes research and education based on the field surveys. Second, in order to promote an holistic understanding of the area (where all the combinations of nature [ecology], culture and history and its interrelations shape the characteristics of the area), a multi-disciplinary and integrated approach through a trans-disciplinary approach is promoted. Third, area studies from a perspective of an international view or comparative studies has been important. Fourthly, ASAFAS has been trying to integrate fundamental studies and applied studies.
