On the 11 October, 2011, Consortium for Southeast Asian Studies in Asia (SEASIA) has just been founded.

On the 11 October 2013, representatives from nine leading research institutions in Southeast Asia met at the Center for Southeast Asian Studies (CSEAS) Kyoto University, to sign a charter creating a Consortium for Southeast Asian Studies in Asia (SEASIA). Shimizu Hiromu, Director of CSEAS visited the Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI) on the 1 October 2013 to receive the first signature.
