Literature shows that indigenous<br \/>\ncommunities worldwide have been increasingly impoverished due to the<br \/>\nloss of access to forest resources and changes in landownership. Can<br \/>\nthese displaced communities move out from the poverty cycle? What are<br \/>\nthe key factors affect the current welfare status of displaced<br \/>\ncommunities? How can social scientists capture the dynamic changes<br \/>\namong the displaced communities from the holistic perspective?<\/p>\n<p>The seminar aims to address above questions by sharing our recent<br \/>\nstudy which uses a mixed method, combining tools from anthropology and<br \/>\neconomics, to understand the long-term effects of the extension of the<br \/>\nShuklaphanta Wildlife Reserve on Rana Tharus community in Kanchanpur,<br \/>\nNepal. It also builds on a novel panel data set. The first round,<br \/>\nwhich was an 18-month long anthropological survey of the indigenous<br \/>\ndisplaced Rana Tharus community administered between 2004 and 2006,<br \/>\ndocumented that the conservation-led displacement made the Rana Tharus<br \/>\ncommunity vulnerable to further impoverishment through the following<br \/>\nchannels: (a) inadequate land-based compensation policy, (b) depletion<br \/>\nof social safety nets, and (c) deterioration of the traditional<br \/>\npatron-client system. We conducted a second round of survey in 2013<br \/>\nalmost nine years after the first round revisiting a majority of the<br \/>\nRana households who participated in the first round. The long-run<br \/>\n(2000-2013) effects using the longitudinal data show prevalence of<br \/>\ndifferent coping strategies between the displaced and the<br \/>\nnon-displaced households. Displaced households experienced livelihood<br \/>\nchanges from agricultural work to services at a large number and<br \/>\nalmost one-third of them became dependent on remittances due to<br \/>\nemigration of male household members abroad.<\/p>\n<p>To sum up, while displaced households suffered from poor land<br \/>\nproductivity and food insecurity in the first five years since<br \/>\ndisplacement, they appear to be better off today, a decade since<br \/>\ndisplacement, compared to non-displaced households. However, this has<br \/>\ncome at the expense of loosening social ties, more livelihood options<br \/>\nand most importantly an overall deterioration in the socio-cultural<br \/>\nwell-being. The mixed methodology helped us understand the causal<br \/>\nlinks between conservation-led displacement and coping mechanisms over<br \/>\ntime.
