It is the main land use<br \/>\nsystems practiced by small scale farmers to ensure subsistence food and a<br \/>\nsmall income. However, due interactions between ecological and<br \/>\nsocio-economical events, the system shows a great spatial variants and<br \/>\ntremendous transformations. It is by essence an agricultural system that<br \/>\ncapitalizes for its sustainability on nutrient stored in vegetation and<br \/>\ntopsoil. Its evolution till date in most parts of the forest and humid<br \/>\nsavannah areas of southern Cameroon has been influenced the quality of<br \/>\nnatural resources, socioeconomic setting but more importantly macroeconomic<br \/>\nevents. It is nowadays based mostly on rotational short fallow systems as<br \/>\ndue to high demand on land near villages and increasing trade in food crops<br \/>\nproducts. But, there is also a continuously encroachment into primarily<br \/>\nforest because of market-oriented productions. Burning also induces changes<br \/>\nin soil properties and environmental services. Several international<br \/>\nefforts have been made to stabilize the system and improve the livelihood<br \/>\nof communities that practise it. Environmental services such as carbon<br \/>\nstocks decrease with increasing extension of agricultural frontiers at the<br \/>\nexpense of forest. But, gains are also observed in savannah-forest margins<br \/>\nwhere forest takes over after agricultural practices or the development of<br \/>\nagro-forests from previous savannah ecosystems. The grass field bocage<br \/>\nmodel with its agro-forests and intensified monocultural systems are sound<br \/>\npractices that need to be explored for system productivity enhancement and<br \/>\nenvironmental protection. Some developmental pathways are possible: (i) the<br \/>\ndevelopment of intensive high carbon agro-systems with multipurpose trees<br \/>\nin the highlands, prompted by high population density and the dynamism of<br \/>\ngrass field people; (ii) the development of extensive low carbon and high<br \/>\nprofitable agricultural system associated with the production of food<br \/>\ncrops; (iii) the development of combined approaches for ensuring a<br \/>\nsustainable agricultural production, an added value by the transformation<br \/>\nof agricultural products and an adequate marketing systems; etc. The<br \/>\nimplication of these in the actual context of reducing emissions from<br \/>\ndeforestation and degradation (REDD+), is that a wide gamut of policies and<br \/>\nfurther researches must be undertaken, if the goal of reducing<br \/>\ninappropriate deforestation is to be taken seriously.<br \/>\nKeywords: Shifting cultivation dynamic, agroforestry, agricultural<br
