Abstract:

Soil is not only the integral part of agroecological system, but also the base for agricultural development. Due to locating in the tropics, soil in the Philippines is easier to be eroded by water. In order to set up a model colony, American authority launched soil survey in the Philippines in 1903. The Philippine nationalist government continued this program and finished in 1987. This presentation will address three questions as below from the perspective of agroecological history: Soil survey in the Philippines, soil erosion in the Philippines, and soil conservation in the Philippines.

Dr. Bao Maohong is Professor of history department, Peking University, China, and is now the visiting research scholar at CSEAS of Kyoto University. His main publications include: Forest and Development: Deforestation in the Philippines, 1946-1995 (China Environmental Science Press, 2008); 『中国の環境ガバナンスと東北アジアの環境協力，北川秀树 监译』(はる書房，2009年); The Origins of Environmental History and Its Development (Peking University Press, 2012).
