I combine<br \/>\nevidence from a lab experiment-which allows me to estimate an<br \/>\nindividual-level sufficient statistic for the distortion-with data I<br \/>\ncollected on a sample of Kenyan entrepreneurs, to quantify the<br \/>\nimportance of the tax. My data reveal high kinship tax rates for a third<br \/>\nof entrepreneurs in my sample. My quantitative analysis makes use of a<br \/>\nsimple structural model of input allocation fitted to my data, and<br \/>\nimplies that removing distortions from kinship taxation would increase<br \/>\ntotal factor productivity by 26%, and increase the share of workers in<br \/>\nfirms with five or more employees from 9% to 56%. These effects are<br \/>\nsubstantially larger than those coming from credit market distortions,<br \/>\nwhich I estimate using a cash transfer RCT. My analysis also implies<br \/>\nstrong complementarities between kinship taxation and credit constraints.<\/p>\n<p>R\u00e9ka Juh\u00e1sz (Princeton Univ. &#038; Columbia Univ. )<br \/>\n&#8220;Temporary Protection and Technology Adoption: Evidence from the<br \/>\nNapoleonic Blockade&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Abstract<br \/>\nThis paper uses a natural experiment to assess whether temporary<br \/>\nprotection from trade with industrial leaders can foster development of<br \/>\ninfant industries in follower countries. Using a new dataset compiled<br \/>\nfrom primary sources, I find that in the short-run regions<br \/>\n(d\u00e9partements) in the French Empire which became better protected from<br \/>\ntrade with the British for exogenous reasons during the Napoleonic Wars<br \/>\n(1803-15) increased capacity in a new technology, mechanised cotton<br \/>\nspinning, to a larger extent than regions which remained more exposed to<br \/>\ntrade. Temporary protection had long term effects. In particular, by<br \/>\nexploiting the fact that the post-war location of the cotton industry<br \/>\nwas determined to a large extent by the historical accident of the wars,<br \/>\nI first show that the location of cotton spinning within France was<br \/>\npersistent, and firms located in regions with higher post-war spinning<br \/>\ncapacity were more productive 30 years later. Second, I find that after<br \/>\nthe restoration of peace, exports of cotton goods from France increased<br \/>\nsubstantially, consistent with evolving comparative advantage in<br \/>\ncottons. Third, I show that as late as 1850, France and Belgium &#8211; both<br \/>\npart of the French Empire prior to 1815 &#8211; had larger cotton spinning<br \/>\nindustries than other Continental European countries which were not<br \/>\nprotected from British trade during the wars;
