\nThe eruption of the global financial crisis in 2008 saw Keynesian
\neconomics make a comeback as the neoliberal economics that had served as
\nthe underpinning of global financial deregulation was discredited. The
\ntalk will discuss the set of concepts that Keynesian economists
\ndeveloped to understand the roots of the crisis, some of them drawn from
\nthe study of the Japan\u2019s financial collapse in the mid-1990\u2019s. While
\ntriumphant in explaining the crisis, Keynesian economics was less
\nsuccessful in providing solutions to it. This was due not only to the
\nstubborn rearguard resistance by neoliberal ideologues and the
\nstructural power of finance capital; also decisive were Keynesianism\u2019s
\nown theoretical and ideological limitations in meeting the urgent task
\nof transforming the global financial system before another, probably
\nmore destructive crisis erupted.<\/p>\n
\nthe structure of economic and political power is the first part of a
\nbroader study of the reform of the global financial system from a
\nprogressive point of view conducted under the auspices of the Center of
\nSoutheast Asian Studies of Kyoto University and the Transnational
\nInstitute in Amsterdam.<\/p>\n
\nWalden Bello is a visiting senior research scholar at the Center for
\nSoutheast Asian Studies of Kyoto University, an associate of the
\nAmsterdam-based Transnational Institute, and a professor at the
\nDepartment of Sociology of the State University of New York at
\nBinghamton. He is the author or co-author of 20 books, the most recent
\nof which are State of Fragmentation: The Philippines in Transition
\n(Manila: Focus on the Global South, 2014), Capitalism\u2019s Last Stand
\n(London: Zed, 2013), Food Wars (London: Verso, 2009), and Dilemmas of
\nDomination (New York: Henry Holt, 2005). He was a member of the House
