Speaker: Dr. BUI The Cuong

Professor, Southern Institute of Social Sciences (Vietnam Academy of

Social Sciences), CSEAS Visiting Research Scholar

Abstract:

Viet Nam has dramatically been experiencing several social

transformations in her modern history since the last century up today.

Those social changes have clearly reflected in the configurations of the

different main social structures of the society, including the social

stratification. In 2015, a survey on social changes was conducted in the

South Economic Zone of Viet Nam. It consists of 2,880 households living

in 80 wards or communes. The presentation outlines the social

stratification structures by occupational groups based on the data set

analysis of the survey. Three properties attached to the social groups,

namely the knowledge, economy and power resources, are measured by three

variables: years of schooling, household’s assets, and being a member

of the ruling Party. The analysis highlights that the distributions of

those resources are consistently structured by the configuration of

social stratification. The findings of the quantitative analysis are

linked to the broader historical and structural changes in the country.
