Message from Director

On January 1, 2017, the Center for Southeast Asian Studies (CSEAS) merged with the Center for Integrated Area Studies (CIAS) to become a new institute. The Japanese name of the new Center for Southeast Asian Studies (CSEAS), Tonan Ajia Chiiki Kenkyu Kenkyusho, reflects our new constitution. CSEAS expresses its thanks to all those who have supported both centers over the years.

　The intense effects of nationalism and globalization are restructuring political and economic mechanisms the world over, leading to the dissemination of advanced sciences and technologies. Increasingly, this has given rise to more complex and interlinked global issues that human societies must confront, issues such as environmental degradation, conflict and terrorism, demographic change, and the emergence and spread of infectious diseases.
　To address these and build safe, sustainable, and peaceful societies, CSEAS will utilize 50 years of research experience in Southeast Asia to formulate and pursue original research agendas. Amassing an extensive body of information through integrated area studies, CSEAS seeks to develop research frameworks based on extensive fieldwork and on observations that derive from the region’s diversity.

　CSEAS’ 35 full-time faculty, 70 visiting and postdoctoral researchers, and other staff now make up a new organization of approximately 150 members.

We look forward to working closely with the research community and all sectors of civil society in and beyond Japan.
