The project will also hold a second meeting in November to discuss the <em>peranakan<\/em> concept in the cases of hybrids and foreigners in the Malay world. Finally the project will hold a third meeting in January 2011 to discuss the concept of <em>peranakan<\/em> with the findings of the above two meetings.<\/p>\n<h5 class=\"base_h5\">Description<\/h5>\n<p>This project takes <em>peranakan<\/em>, one of the people-grouping concepts in the Malay world, and attempts to develop the concept as a framework for people-grouping. Cosmopolitanism emerged in efforts to overcome the limitations of people-grouping with nationality and ethnicity which employs exclusive boundaries among people. But the cosmopolitanism which freed people from nativity assumes a self-reliance of people which not everyone is equipped to deal with. <em>Peranakan<\/em> shares a similarity with cosmopolitanism in that it does not emphasize the exclusive boundaries of people, yet it is different from cosmopolitanism because <em>peranakan<\/em> is based on a certain territory and hence has locality. It is expected that the concept of <em>peranakan<\/em>, which originated from Southeast Asia, will develop as a framework for people-grouping in the world.<\/p>\n<table class=\"table-caption\">\n<tr>\n<td><a href=\"https:\/\/www-archive.cseas.kyoto-u.ac.jp\/ipcr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/fy2010iv-6-1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www-archive.cseas.kyoto-u.ac.jp\/ipcr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/fy2010iv-6-1.jpg\"\/><\/a><br \/>\nYasmin Ahmad, a film director who played a leading role in the new wave of Malaysian films. She had directed six feature films before she died in 2009 in which peranakans play considerable parts.<\/td>\n<td><a href=\"https:\/\/www-archive.cseas.kyoto-u.ac.jp\/ipcr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/fy2010iv-6-2.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www-archive.cseas.kyoto-u.ac.jp\/ipcr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/fy2010iv-6-2.jpg\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nDonald (later Fuad) Stephens, a Eurasian peranakan and the first Chief Minister of the State of Sabah, Malaysia.
