Newspapers from various Southeast Asian nations, collected by both domestic and international universities and institutions for Area Studies of Southeast Asia, will be preserved by means of media conversion. We will also seek to develop a platform for sharing these materials. In the first year, the technical problems of media conversion and legal issues surrounding collaborative preservation and sharing of the materials were discussed. In the second year, we will have more specific discussions and proposals to come up with feasible projects enabling collaboration in the preservation and sharing of Southeast Asian newspapers.

The aim of the project is to create a platform to preserve newspapers from various Southeast Asian nations for a long period of time by means of media conversion and data sharing among libraries. It will promote the use of these newspapers to bring new developments to Area Studies in Southeast Asia.

To establish methodology for the preservation and utilization of newspapers, we will promote the use of the newspapers as vital informational resources in Southeast Asia. If we can find a common way to enable long-term preservation of those newspapers, from technical and legal perspectives, it will be a practical and useful infrastructure for libraries across the region. It will also make it much easier for academics around the world to access Southeast Asian newspapers.
