Causes of the May 2018 Electoral Revolution<\/p>\n<p><strong>Date and Time<\/strong>: October 12th (Fri.) 2018, 12:00-<br \/>\n<strong>Venue<\/strong>: Tonan-tei (Room no. 201) on the second floor of Inamori Foundation Memorial Building, CSEAS, Kyoto University<\/p>\n<p><strong>Abstract<\/strong>\uff1a<br \/>\nIn May 2018, after more than six decades, the ruling coalition in<br \/>\nMalaysia lost at federal lections for the first time. This \u201celectoral<br \/>\nrevolution\u201d was the result of two necessary factors. First, weakened<br \/>\ncohesion of the ruling coalition (i.e. particularly the split of UMNO),<br \/>\nand second, the establishment of a strong and cohesive opposition<br \/>\ncoalition. Yet, this constellation of forces alone does not constitute a<br \/>\nsufficient explanation. It has to be added that the government was not<br \/>\nable to fully dispose of its traditional tools to maintain<br \/>\nauthoritarianism. Because of new media, international exposure, and<br \/>\npowerful civil society networks, the government was forced to use these<br \/>\ntools cautiously and with much restraint, and thus ineffectively.
