Abstract<\/strong>:
\nEarly modern Southeast Asia can be characterized as a region of low
\npopulation density, abundant natural resources, and high labour
\nproductivity in agriculture. Reid (1993) argues that Southeast Asia
\nenjoyed a remarkable prosperity during what he describes as the Age of
\nCommerce, lasting from the 15th to the 17th century, and that the
\nmid-17th century marks the beginning of a period of relative economic
\ndecline, implying that the international trade was the main cause of
\nprosperity.
\nThere is however no quantitative evidence that intra-Asian trade
\ndeclined drastically after the mid-17th century.Available information on
\nurban real wages indicates that living standards were well above Chinese
\nand Indian levels. The population growth observed throughout the region
\nin the 18th and 19th centuries suggests also a strong resilience to
\nclimate shocks and wars. The expansion of intra-Asian international
\ntrade was associated with a process of monetization and the
\nreinforcement of the fiscal capacity of the various large and small
\npolities.
\nTo what extent was the economic transformation sustainable? To answer
\nthis question, we can use the conceptual framework proposed by Dasgupta
\n(2009). Sustainable development at the country level is identified as an
\nincrease in per capita terms of comprehensive wealth, which is the total
\nvalue of natural, physical (i.e. produced), and human capital stocks.<\/p>\n
