Abstract:
The speaker will give a talk on populist strategies and the public relations of Joko Widodo (“Jokowi”) as the Indonesia’s incumbent President. He garnered enthusiastic supports from ordinary citizens by emphasizing being autonomous from the political establishments and powerful vested interests in Jakarta. To meet expectations from the voters, Jokowi has strived to keep the image as an “outsider” to the elites. In fact, his popularity remains high even after three years in the office despite of the ceaseless agitations from powerful opponents in the parliament and on the streets. Then, how has Jokowi maintained his popularity? What kind of efforts do he and his team make for the public relations in the administration? The speaker who has managed Jokowi’s day-to-day social media communication since 2014 unveils some of his key strategies.
