My research deals with the historical formation, trajectory, and cultural and political consequences of elites in the Philippines and East Asia more generally.

My long-term research on Philippine literary history and criticism deals with the issue of nationalism and its influence on Filipino writings in English, Filipino, and Chinese.

I have done extensive research on the Overseas Chinese and Chinese Overseas, with particular emphasis in literary, cinematic, and cultural production, in the Philippines and Southeast Asia more generally.
