Abstract: The Kazakhs, Tajiks, Turkmens and Uzbeks in Central Asia

share some distinct “holy groups” including the Khoja, Sayyids, and

Ishon, some lineages of which occur in two or more of these people.

The data presented in this paper was collected during multiple

short-term field-research trips between 2010 and 2015, mainly to

Tashkent city in Uzbekistan, as well as to the Turkistan region of

Kazakhstan. I trace the flow of ideas and imagined translocal links

between “holy groups” among thеse localities. I investigate

differences in practical meaning and the uses of Khoja, Sayyid, and

other identities in above mentioned communities.
