Outline of Research
This project aims to construct a network and an online system in order to share information and resources of periodicals on Southeast Asian Studies among the Southeast Asian related institutions in Japan and possibly in Southeast Asia. The study includes the following:
1) The creation of an online database of Bibliography of Southeast Asian Studies Related Periodicals –Union List in Japan- (2009).
2) Hosting seminars on the current situation of periodical publications in Southeast Asia
3) Information Collection on library holdings of Southeast Asia Studies related periodicals which were not included in Bibliography of Southeast Asian Studies Related Periodicals –Union List in Japan- (2009), namely, newspapers and government publications.
Description
The most significant result expected from this project is the development of a tool for resource sharing in Southeast Asian Studies related materials which can become a model program in Area Studies. The libraries of Southeast Asian Studies have long been suffering from the absence of a sufficient online union catalog with original scripts to learn holding information on periodicals in various Southeast Asian languages. This lack of tools has limited the capacity of libraries in several ways.
This project will create an online database of bibliography of Southeast Asian Studies Related Periodicals –Union List in Japan-(2009) which provides holding information in 108 libraries and information centers in Japan on 432 core journals on Southeast Asia Studies selected by both librarians and area specialists. This database will contribute as a first step toward more collaborate works and resources sharing among Southeast Asian Studies related libraries.
The project also plans seminars on the current situation of periodical publications in Southeast Asia in order to update librarians’ knowledge and contribute to a more efficient and unique collection development for each library.
