Welcome message
On behalf of the organizers of the Sixth Conference of the Latin American Student Council of Asia and Oceania (CELAO), we extend our most warm welcome to all the participants of this historical international event that will be held in Kyoto, Japan, from September 16th to the 18th of 2014. The Conference has the following characteristics and particularities. 1) It is a historical event to hold the sixth conference in Kyoto, Japan, Osaka’s neighboring city, where we can remember the funding of the CELAO 11 years ago. This way, we can celebrate a cycle of exchange between Asia, Oceania, Latin America and the Caribbean on the foundation of the CELAO platform. 2) In order to relate to the central topic, “Tradition and modernity in Latin America: perspectives and reconsiderations,” we invite the participants to reflect and deepen their perspectives, new and historical, based on the various debates and studies that have been collected through the past century as well as the current one. The essence of the central theme is also present in other aspects: various works that discuss the situation of Latin America after the neo-liberal era have been emerging, and Kyoto serves as the most traditional city of Japan, both as a hub for culture as well as a center for modern science. 3) The participation of specialists in studies about Latin America and the Caribbean, who come from Japan as well as other countries in Asia and Oceania, make for an original array of panelists as well as content to be addressed in the conference. Furthermore, for participants who come from the Americas, Europe and other parts of the world, this visit to Kyoto, as part of Asia, offers a wonderful opportunity for direct experience and understanding of contemporary and historical relations between both sides of the Pacific Ocean. In all senses, this visiting experience and the consequent intellectual exchange can provoke the realization of comparative studies between different regions. We look forward to receiving you here in Kyoto, in September of 2014. KOBAYASHI Munehiro, Chairman of the Preparatory Committee. |
