The Center for Southeast Asia Studies (CSEAS) was established in 1963, as first institute devoted to the comprehensive and multi-discipilinary understanding of Southeast Asia. Since then, Center has engaged in diverse research work, ranging from field work-based studies in natural sciences as well as in humanities and social sciences. Today, the Center has five research division (Integrated Area Studies, Humans and the Environment, Society and Culture, and Economics and Politics, and the newly established division of Area Informatics). CSEAS has a liaison office in Bangkok (established in 1969) and in Jakarta (established 1973), whose mission is to extend the Center:s service to local scholars and contribute to building a broad academic network in Asia. CSEAS research are engaged in various research, ranging from studying ageing societies, the social safety net dilemma, epidemics in Southeast Asia, politica democra tization and decentralization, gender, sustainable development, regional corporation, and contemporary to history.
