Evaluation of tropical fast growing tree plantation as a new N2O emission source and development of the mitigation options

2) Related Organization

Graduate School of Agriculture, Kyoto University

3) Period

2007-2011

4) Outline

In South East Asia, tree plantations mainly of fast growing tree species are rapidly expanding on the devastated lands appeared after deforestation of natural forests, and Acacia mangium has been planted widely. Our preliminary study suggested that soils of Acacia mangium plantation are possibly new sources of nitrous oxide (N2O), one of the green house effect gases. This research project tries to quantify the Acacia soil as a new N2O emission source along the temporal and spatial variability, and simultaneously to develop the technology for its mitigation.
