A Report on International Conference on “Disasters in History: The Philippines in Comparative Perspective”
The International Conference on “Disasters in History: The Philippines in Comparative Perspective” was held at Ateneo de Manila University in Quezon City on October 24 and 25, 2014. It was organized by the Philippine Studies journal and the Department of History, School of Social Sciences, Ateneo de Manila University, with CSEAS Kyoto University as an official partner. There were 25 presentations, which included topics in the humanities, social sciences and natural sciences.
Profs. Greg Bankoff of University of Hull and Gemma Teresa Narisma of Ateneo de Manila University delivered keynote speeches, respectively on “Exploring the Limits of the Filipino Past: Toward More Trans-Environmental History of the Philippines” and “Global Warming and Extreme Weather Impacts in the Philippines since the Early Twentieth Century.”
Our Center sent Prof. Hiromu Shimizu and two graduate students of ASAFAS, Ryosuke Kajita and Zenta Nishio, who read papers with power-point presentation respectively on “Earthquakes in Indonesia, 1500-1940: Using Historical Materials in the Reconstruction of Old Data” and “How does Disaster Uproot Livelihood of Squatter Communities? A Case Study of an Evacuation Center in Metro Manila, Philippines.”
During the symposium Prof. Shimizu of CSEAS and Prof. Filomeno Aguilar, the dean of School of Social Sciences, Ateneo de Manila University exchanged MOU documents with necessary signatures already on.
