Abstract:

Japanese traders in the late 15th and early 16th centuries came to the
Philippines in search of jars that were used to store tea. These were
known as ruson-tsubo or Luzon jars that were highly esteemed by
conoissuers of the Tea Ceremony or Chanoyu. While these jars maintained
their utilitarian purpose they were transformed into prestige objects in
the tea room where they were displayed and contemplated upon. These jars
are markers of early Philppines-Japan cultural relations.
