Title: Renewable Energy in Bangladesh: Focuses on Solar Energy, Wind Energy and Biomass

Abstract:
Present status, potentiality and utilization strategy/future target of renewable energy like solar energy, wind energy and biomass in rural areas of Bangladesh as well as Southeast Asian countries have studied for knowing details scenario of renewable energy system. Energy supply is important for socio-economic development of rural people. It has direct impact on the daily life and influencing livelihood. Due to the crisis of energy with dark prospects, people in rural areas are deprived from healthcare, education, information technology (TV, Cell phone, computer, etc.), and fundamental facilities for agricultural activities. The abundant renewable energy in rural areas has a large potential to be used in various sectors for ensuring a green environment for sustainable future generation. Keeping pace with the global trend, Bangladesh has also attached due importance to development of renewable energy system through Power System Master Plan 2020. Therefore, local government and private sector in Bangladesh are now interested to implement renewable energy system for different applications like solar/wind powered irrigation and drinking pump, solar mini grid for solar home system (SHS), food processing, lighting and ventilation of poultry house, solar powered rural vehicles, rural healthcare center and biomass based bio-heat and bio-fuel (briquette), etc. Based on the details scenario and comparing with suitable energy conversion system available in Southeast Asian region, it is possible to design and recommend a socially and technically acceptable energy conversion system for improving wide range of socio-economic and environmental status in rural areas of Bangladesh.

Md. Rostom Ali has been a faculty member for more than 11 years in Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU). Now he is an Associate Professor in the Department of Farm Power and Machinery, BAU and currently a visiting research scholar at CSEAS, Kyoto University. He was head of the same department in BAU during 2012-2014. During 2008-2011 he has conducted research at Tohoku University, Japan, for obtaining PhD (Engineering). He has completed three research projects successfully as a principal investigator which were funded by Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh. He has published about 25 research articles in peer-reviewed journals. His publications includes renewable energy systems, farm machineries for rural farmers and environment friendly agricultural activities. Dr. Ali is also a member of editorial board in the Journal of Institutional Engineering and Technology. Being aware of the finite stock of fossil fuels and their negative impact on the environment, he is working on renewable energy (solar energy, wind energy and biomass) system for rural/underprivileged people since 2003. Bangladesh plans to generate 10% of its electricity from renewable energy sources by 2020. Therefore, researchers and academicians like Dr. Ali are looking forward to focusing on off-grid areas (60% of rural and hilly areas) for power generation through renewable energy to address poverty elimination and achievement of all the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
