　Shaping the Middle Class City:
a Comparative Study on Ordinary Residential Architecture, 1950s-1970s

My work address the history of 20th century housing policies, forms,
cultures and practices, devoting a particular attention to the circula-
tion of residential models and ideals between the 1930s and the 1960s.
It is possible to identify two main lines: the first focuses on the
encounter between modernist European architectural principles and
American federal policies in the shaping of the first New Deal housing
programs; the second, investigates the residential architecture built
for the middle class between the 1950s and the 1970s, analyzing the role
that collective buildings and neighborhoods built for this social group
had in the processes of growth and transformation of the post-war city.
Rarely addressed by architectural historians, this “average production”
met the requirements of a booming market, capable of codifying the
expectations and needs of the middle class in terms of domestic comfort
and modernity and to produce shared and recognizible residential solu-
tions in very different social, political and economic contexts.
To broaden the geographic boundaries of the comparative study, linking
the cases in a wider interpretative frame, I plan to investigate the
specificities and general features (in terms of typologies, practices,
market strategies, actors involved, professional culture, techniques,
lifestyles…) that characterize the process in Japan. Adopting the same
investigation tools and methodology, the research explore the circula-
tion, hybridization, local reception/rejection of European housing and
settlement models in the construction of a number of large-scale
collective housing projects built in Japan after WWII. Through the
analysis of these cases study (not only addressed through the study
of the design and construction processes, but also looking at the forms
of use and transformation) the study aims to observe the encounter
between local domestic cultures and the foreign models, devoting a
particular attention to the multiple ways of their dissemination
(i.e. through the specialized press).

　近現代建築史からみた日本による20世紀アジア開発とその連鎖
　　谷川 竜一（京都大学地域研究統合情報センター）

20世紀の日本・アジア関係を、建造物の歴史という観点から研究を進めて
きました。特に、戦前の朝鮮半島北部地域において日本人技術者たちが
都市建設も含めた巨大開発を行ったこと、そしてその都市やインフラが、
戦後の北朝鮮で変容し、北朝鮮の人々が造る新しい社会の中に位置づけら
れていった歴史が、最近の主要な関心の一つとしてあります。また一方で、
戦前の日本植民地を建設した日本人技術者たちが戦後は東南アジアの各地
に向かい、現在の日本によるアジア開発援助の祖型となった戦後賠償工事
をリードした事実にも、強い関心を持っています。
断片を繋げていく発表になると思いますが、地域研にいた3年半の間で
いろいろと学び、経験したことを含めて、発表させて頂ければと思ってい
ます。
