Title: Satoyama Ecosystem in Myanmar: A case study of some villages in Ywangan Township, Southern Shan State, Myanmar

Abstract:
‘Satoyama’ is a Japanese term for a traditional rural production landscapes, harmony between human beings and nature”. Awareness of the conservation and utilization of environment and biodiversity in “Satoyama” concept has not been raised in Myanmar at a national level, generally. At a local or community level, however, there are areas where the Satoyama ecosystem has been maintained, mostly in hilly regions. The forest lands in Shan States were historically owned and preserved for centuries by the Shan Sawbwa (Royal princes) since the time of Burmese King Era. Under the socialist regime in 1960s, the ownership of Sawbwa was abolished and all forest lands transferred to the state owned properties. Although large areas of forests have been degraded and deforested these days, some forest lands still remains as community owned conservation areas in Shan States. With their indigenous ecological knowledge, the local people value the importance of their lands and forests and well manage them. A case study was conducted in several villages in Ywangan Township, Southern Shan State where the Danu ethnic minorities reside. The objective the study is to elucidate an effective way to harmonize the rural development and natural environment conservation in “Satoyama” areas of Myanmar through field research, workshops in comparison with those of Japan.

Prof. Khin is a retired Pro-Rector (Academic Affairs) of the Yezin Agricultural University (YAU) Myanmar. She received B.Ag degree from University of Agriculture, Mandalay, Myanmar in 1972 and M.Ag degree from Faculty of Agriculture, Kyoto University in 1985. She obtained her Ph.D degree majoring in Environmental Plant Physiology in 2004 from YAU, Nay Pyi Taw, Myanmar. With thirty- three years of experiences in teaching and research, she is now working as a special affiliated professor of YAU, taking responsibilities of international collaborative research and supervising post graduate programs of the university. She is an Executive Committee member of two local NGOs, namely ECCDI Ecosystem Conservation and Community Development Initiatives) and FREDA (Forest Resource Environment Development and Conservation Association), Yangon. Currently, she is serving as a leader of National Green House Gas Inventory Team of the Second National Communication Project under UNEP for Myanmar, a national team leader of ATWGARD (ASEAN Technical Working Group on Agriculture and Research Development), and a country representative of Low Carbon Asia Network (LoCARNet).
