Specialty: Geography, Political Ecology

I am a postdoctoral research fellow under CSEAS’ Japan-ASEAN Platform for Transdisciplinary Studies program. Prior to joining CSEAS, I did my PhD in Human Geography at the University of Manchester, UK through an EU-funded Marie Skłodowska-Curie Fellowship. My PhD research looked at the implications of financialization on the activities of the global gold mining industry, and its effects on concrete mining projects and geographies, using concepts and approaches in critical geography, political ecology, geology and financial accounting.

My current research takes a political ecology approach to understanding energy transition in the Philippines and the broader East/Southeast Asian region. Looking in particular at the dynamics of coal phase-out, it aims to shed light on the conditions that impede the shift to renewable energy sources, with attention to the social relations that preserve the dominance of the fossil fuel energy regime nationally and regionally. I have a long-standing interest in nature-society relations and questions of access, control and governance of natural resources. Through my research on energy transition, I hope to provide a critical lens for understanding the factors that structure countries’ transition pathways; bring renewed attention to “other ecologies” in the Global South, particularly timely amid recent scholarly debates on decentering AngloAmerican political ecology within the field; and inform the crafting of appropriate policy measures to ‘manage’ the decline of sunset industries like coal, as well as strategies to achieve energy security and sustainability. I am fortunate to be conducting this research under the guidance of CSEAS, especially given the institution’s long history of research and engagement in the Southeast Asian region.
