Specialty: Social/Cultural Anthropology, Thai Studies, Southeast Asian Studies

I am a program-specific assistant professor at Kyoto University's CSEAS, after two-year work as a program-specific researcher there. I mainly write about power in Buddhist Thailand. I received my PhD in Anthropology and Sociology from SOAS, University of London, with a dissertation that explores the relationship between Thai Buddhist cosmology and sovereign power with an ethnographic focus on divination practitioners in Bangkok. My area of research gravitates around topics such as divination, spirit mediumship and kingship. Current research projects at CSEAS focus on Buddhist theory of kingship, sovereignty and Thai notions of embodied divinity.

Originally from Lake Como, in Italy, I have been a resident of Bangkok since 2002. Prior to my appointment at CSEAS, I lectured at Thammasat University, worked in education and consultancy, and served as an interpreter for the Thai police. In addition to my work in academia, I value keeping a dialogue with a wider audience. To this end, I have contributed with interviews and op-eds to media outlets including the BBC and The New York Times.
