And JSPS-LIPI Core University Program in the Field of Wood Science ay inilunsad upang itaguyod ang agham para sa pangmatagalang pag-unlad at paggamit sa mga rekursong gubat sa mga rehiyong tropikal mula TP1996 hanggang TP2005. Ang Research Institute for Sustainable Humanosphere (dating Wood Research Institute) sa Kyoto University ang tumatayong sentral na unibersidad sa Hapon samantalang ang Research and Development Unit for Biomaterials (dating Research Group on Wood Science, Research and Development Center for Applied Physics) ng Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI) ang sentral na institusyon sa Indonesia. Ang mga gawaing syentipiko sa programang ito ay sumasaklaw sa lahat ng larangan ng syensya ng kahoy at teknolohiya, kabilang ang agham materyal, pisika, kemistriya, biolohiya, genetiks at agham pangkapaligiran. Mahigit 500 syentipiko mula sa dalawampu’t pitong unibersidad sa Hapon, dalawampu’t pitong unibersidad at institusyon sa Indonesia, apat na unibersidad at institusyon sa Malaysia, isang institusyon sa Pilipinas at isang institusyon sa Biyetnam ang sumali sa programang ito.
