Specialty: History of Asia, History of British Empire, Zoroastrianism

I am a European researcher working on the history and geopolitics of Asia. In November 2017, I moved to Japan on a two-year postdoctoral Japan Society for the Promotion of Science’s fellowship, working at the Kokoro Research Center, Kyoto University. At the end of the fellowship, I was appointed collaborative researcher at the Kokoro Research Center (Nov. 2019 – Oct. 2020) and affiliated assistant professor at the Center for Southeast Asian Studies, Division of Cross-regional Studies. Also, in January 2021 I was appointed program-specific assistant professor again at the Center for Southeast Asian Studies, Division of Environmental Coexistence (Research Unit for Realization of Sustainable Society).

My current research, as a program-specific assistant professor at the CSEAS, focuses on the impact of religious traditions on legislation and political choices relating to environmental sustainability in Asia. In particular, my concentration has been on the Zoroastrian tradition in India and Iran, on the sustainable development model of Bhutan, and on the role of the Catholic tradition in South and Southeast Asia. Indeed, since its very ancient origins, Zoroastrianism – an ancient Central-Western Asian religion – has paid major attention to the environment and progress. Several years ago, the Kingdom of Bhutan outlined a new development model that is now seriously considered by scholars, institutions, and international organizations. Finally, Pope Francis’s attitude to the environment redefined the Christian view in the face of sustainability

As an affiliated assistant professor, the title of my research is The geopolitical space of the British Empire in Indochina and High Asia (1858-1948). Specifically, I am currently studying the mediation role assumed by the British between the nationalist Chinese government of Chunking and the Saadabad Pact’s countries during the Second World War.
