- Outline
- Insular Southeast Asia is repeatedly hit by natural disasters such as typhoon,
earthquake, tsunami, eruption, etc. The toll of victims by Sumatra tsunami
disaster in December 2004 reached 1300,000 in Indonesia and over 180,000
in all including Sri Lanka, India, and Thailand. The earthquake of Central
Java in May 2006 caused more than 6,000 victims.
This project searches for smooth and effective ways for area study specialists
to contribute to disaster prevention, mitigation, and rehabilitation. All
the project members have some sort of commitment in emergency aids and
rehabilitation programs after a disaster. Reflecting their own experiences,
members will try to find a way to combine academic researches of and practical
contributions to areas vulnerable to natural disasters.
The main project site is Gesikan village in Bantul, Central Java, where
was severely hit by the 2006 earthquake. We will construct a small house
in a village-pekarangan (home garden) as an activity center, and then will
make a hazard map of the area and other module kits in corporation with
villagers to be used for disaster prevention and mitigation activities
and education.
