The Japanese Society for Asian Studies (JSAS), a private, nonprofit,
grant-making foundation, was established in 1975 with endowments from various
private enterprises in Japan. Its main goal is to develop and enhance research
activities that focus on contemporary issues relating to the economies,
societies, cultures and environments of Asian countries, and to promote
exchange of researchers and scholars between Japan and other Asian countries.
JSAS also provides grants to young researchers and graduate students, which
may include support for individual or group research projects and the hosting
of scientific meetings. Some of the CSEAS staff are assigned as either
members of the board of directors or the board of trustees, and there they
play an important role in helping manage the foundation’s activities.
