Training the Next Generation/Linkage with SocietySoutheast Asia Seminar/International Cooperation/Domestic CooperationSoutheast Asia SeminarThe Southeast Asia Seminar has been held each summer since 1976. Initially, the seminar ran for two weeks, offering intensive lectures that provided an overview of the nature, culture, society, economy, and other aspects of the region and the basic knowledge needed to understand the concept of area studies. Recently, participatory lectures have been introduced and encouraged and the period has been shortened to one week for the convenience of the participants. The seminar is open to the public and has attracted numerous participants each year, particularly postgraduate students starting their engagement with Southeast Asian studies. Past Southeast Asia Seminars (Japanese) Institutional Program for Younger Researcher Overseas Visits“The Institutional Program for Younger Researcher Overseas Visits”, granted by JSPS Researcher Overseas Visit Fund, extends opportunities to younger researchers to visit overseas research institutions or research areas for the purpose of fostering highly capable researchers with an international perspective. CSEAS sends younger researchers, who are proficient in local languages and experienced in long-term fieldwork, into institutes and research areas not exclusively in Southeast Asia as well as all over the world. Our ultimate objective is to establish an emerging and pragmatic paradigm for social development grounded in the idea of global coexistence by applying accumulated knowledge in the regions and connecting them to the rest of the world. List of Overseas Visits, 2009 - 2012 Fiscal Year International CooperationWe are actively engaged in various kinds of international cooperation including joint research with non-Japanese researchers, the CSEAS visiting research fellows program and the academic exchanges that the overseas liaison offices regularly conduct. On the administrative side, we are involved in various councils and organizations that deal with educational, research institutions and policy issues. We recently have also become involved in acting as links between Japan and Southeast Asian in cooperation with non-government organizations (NGOs). Activities in 2008 and 2012 Fiscal Year Domestic CooperationWe attach importance to sharing our research achievement with the public and we value the ideas and knowledge we gained from our constant dialogues with communities and peoples in Japan regardnig the future directions of our research activities. We also avail of opportunities that enable us to familiarize citizens about Southeast Asian studies and to boost interchanges with citizens and the region through various activities that we often engage in cooperation with other universities, administrative organizations and local authorities. |
