International Academic Exchange

Introduction

International exchanges among scholars and public intellectuals are one of the most important and fundamental bases for the continued development of Southeast Asian Studies. More than ten foreign visiting scholars and librarians are engaging research activities in CSEAS at any given time of the year. These visiting scholars are also officially invited to participate in the monthly staff meeting and in the colloquia, which follow the meeting. The regular meetings by different divisions and committees also invite visiting scholars and they are also asked to be involved in the increasing number of academic seminars organized in English.

To promote international exchange through the CSEAS visiting fellowship, the Center’s international exchanges committee sends invitations to universities and research institutes all over the world and posts an announcement of the fellowship openings in its website. These announcements are made biannually (in the spring and the autumn). After receiving the applications, the committee hands the files over to the different divisions which will then come up with their respective short list of potential fellows. Final decision as who to invite as visiting fellow will be made at the faculty meeting.

Applicants to the fellowship do not only come from Southeast Asia but also from other parts of the world. And there has been a dramatic increase in the number of applications. Once accepted, a visiting fellow is expected to conduct research or prepare a research for publication during his or her six to twelve months stay in Kyoto University.

CSEAS also accepts foreign researchers who are on post-doctoral fellowship funded by the Japan Society for the Promotion of the Sciences (JSPS), as well as researchers who have received other domestic and external grants.

Collaborative researches between CSEAS and foreign universities have likewise been going on ever since the Center's establishment. These researches are done under the framework of memoranda of understanding (MOU) that the Center has signed with these institutions. Recently, the CSEAS MOU with the Yezin Agricultural University and The SEAMEO Regional Centre for History and Tradition in Myanmar has enabled researchers from the Center and Myanmar to explore integrated area studies. This is a major breakthrough given the past decades of difficulties in conducting academic activities in Myanmar.

Exchange project which realized by Core University Programme by Japan Society for the Promotion of Science is at its final stage with significant research results. Initially, the project only involved collaboration with researchers from Thailand, but since then the Core University Programme has expanded to include scholars from Indonesia, the Philippines and Malaysia.

Finally, the CSEAS Overseas Liaison Offices in Jakarta and Bangkok also promote close exchanges with scholars in these countries by holding international symposiums and regular academic meetings with local researchers and academic collaborator.
