ArchivesAbout Staff: FY2005FUJITA, Koichi (Professor) Rural Development
Research InterestsThe overall topic of mine is 'Rural Development Studies in Asia from the Perspective of Comparative Insitutional Analysis'. 'Institutions' here mean the mode of organization of basic production factors (such as land, labor, and capital) embedded in the indigenous social and political organizations including families, communities, and local administrations in each area, where the nature of regionality are most clearly reflected. To investigate the inter-relationships between such 'insititutions' and economic development is the core of my 'area studies'. At present, I am pursuing following topics, through fieldwork in Southeast and South Asian countries, particularly in Myanmar, Laos, India, and Bangladesh. (1) Comparative study on the mode of existence of the poor in relation
to agrarian structure
A large regional difference can be observed in the status and the function of the poorest people (mainly landless laborers and tenants) in each agrarian economy/society in Asia. This is a research on the socio-economic background and the consequences of such differences. (2) Comparative study on rural development finance Finance (credit) is one of the key issues for understanding rural economy in developing countries. This is a comparative study on institutions of microfinance, which has grown as an important tool for povery alleviation. (3) Comparative study on utilization and management of local natural resources This is a regional comparative study on the functions of state (government), villages, civil organizations, and/or market mechanism, in terms of utilization/management of local natural resources, such as land, water, meadow, forest, etc. (4) Research on border trade Development of border trade is prominent in recent years in the mainland Southeast Asia. This is a study on transformations of economy/society and the functions of traders, entrepreneurs, and the state in such a process, through investigating border trade between Myanmar and China, Thailand, Bangladesh, or Laos and China.
