Field Research

Research Topic：The purpose of this fieldwork was to conduct a preliminary research in order to seek the best methodology to approach my topic such as “language activities of ethnic identity of Chinese Indonesians.” I have spent most of the time in Belitung where Chinese dialects are freely spoken among the locals conducting survey and interview with ethnic Chinese in the local community. In addition, I have collected some documentation both in Jakarta and Xiamen. My original intention was to grasp the notion of language by taking data on language activities of Chinese Indonesians in Belitung where Chinese dialects are freely spoken and possibly in Jakarta where Chinese languages are used more consciously, then discuss the case within the Indonesian social context. However, with the result of this fieldwork, I now am feeling a need to expand my research target to non-ethnic Chinese so that I could obtain a better picture on the notion of the language toward Indonesian so that relationship of language activities and ethnic identity could be more visible.
