Current Research Interests
Villagers in a field site (N.E. Thailand) who are both destroyers and protectors of the forest For several years, I have studied politics and policy development in urban
areas, in addition to examining rural areas, by focusing on the problems
of Thai forests. This year, I have also conducted research into agricultural
issues.
More specifically, I consider the relationship between popularist politics
and the realities of forest areas. In addition, I clarify the evolution
of growing rice for two kinds of market, as well as growing four types
of rice. By the former, I mean growing rice 1) for foreign countries and
urban areas of Thailand and 2) for local markets and personal consumption.
By type, I mean (1) ‘Green Revolution’ type rice, which requires much input
and has high yield, (2) organic rice, which requires no chemical pesticide,
(3) types linked to mixed farming, and (4) low-input, lower-yield types,
grown by farmers who have other jobs on the side.
I view the stakeholders’ activities as the process, and result, of adaptations,
responses, compromises, and challenges in a world that is changing socio-economically.
I follow their activities in both urban and rural areas, and connect them
to actual land uses and agricultural techniques.
