I have been working on anthropology of international migration with special focus on the case Filipino migrants. In the Philippines, it is said that many people are motivated to migrate by sapalaran, a local concept in the Philippines meaning a search for better luck. Based on a case study of villagers from Samar Island who migrated to Manila, I have been looking into what constitutes “luck” for Samarnon migrants. A close examination of migrant narratives and interactions with people in their home villages reveals that luck is not just a matter of monetary gain, but also relates to the ways in which migrants maintain social relationships. Based on these findings, I attempt to make a theoretical rethinking of migration studies by referring to Max Weber’s theory of rationality and action, and present an alternative view of capitalism in relation to migration.

Recently, I am involved with new projects that investigate increasing human mobility and social changes, such as (1) comparative study on migration and family in the Asian context, and (2) analysis and policy measures relating to international migration of women from the perspective of non-traditional security.
