”Diaspora in an ’Open City': Transformation of Identities among Filipina Migrants in Dubai”
Project Leader: HOSODA, Naomi

Outline
This study is a comparative investigation of the flow of two groups of Filipina women who go to the Middle Eastern city of Dubai at the United Arab Emirates for work. One group is composed of Muslim women from the province of Maguindanao, while the other consists of women who come from the province of Samar. The research will examine how the lives and identities of these women changed as they moved from out of their respective provinces, to transit to Manila, then to Dubai. Some of these women ended up staying for a long time in Dubai, getting married and having their families there, while others stay during the term of their contract then go back home.
The research will examine the encounters between these two groups of Filipinas and the different peoples in this “Open City” in the Middle East. It will look at how their perceptions of being “Filipina,” “Muslim,” and as “women” changed upon meeting not only the citizens of the United Arab Emirates but also the thousands of foreign workers and residents who live in this international hub, which may even affect the national politics in their homeland, the Philippines.
