National University of Singapore

    National University of Singapore’s Graphene Research Centre (GRC) has a 1,000-m2 lab space and an 800-m2 state-of-the-art clean room, and is home to many related labs and international partner labs. Currently 16 researchers, two research assistants, and 10 PhD students carry out their research at GRC.
  • [Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences]
    National University of Singapore’s Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences includes many departments in the humanities and social sciences. These departments are among the best in the Asian region. The faculty has an extremely global structure, which encompasses its faculty members and students. It is an important hub for the flow of global researchers. The faculty has a close working relationship with the university’s Asia Research Institute (ARI) and Yale-NUS College. It is, without a doubt, a global center of Asia studies. Among other things, it boasts leading researchers (e.g. Professors Brenda Yeoh, Stella Quah, and Jay Garfield) in the fields of international migration, Asian families, and Asian philosophy.

Chulalongkorn University

  • [Faculty of Economics]
    Chulalongkorn University is one of Thailand’s most prestigious institutions of higher education. It has 19 faculties, 23 colleges, a total of 39,750 students (26,305 undergraduate students, 10,771 master’s degree students, and 2,674 PhD students), 2,856 faculty members, and 5,156 staff members. Kyoto University’s Graduate School of Economics and Chulalongkorn University’s Faculty of Economics currently have an academic exchange agreement. The Faculty of Economics also offers programs in English: an undergraduate degree (EBA, the Bachelor of Arts Program in Economics), five master’s degrees (Master of Arts in Labour Economics and Human Resource Management, Master of Arts in International Economic and Finance, Master of Arts Programme in Business and Managerial Economics, and Master of Science in Health Economics) and one PhD degree (International Dissertation Doctorate Programme). A business school (Sasin Graduate Institute of Business Administration) is also established. In addition to 55 full-time faculty members and 84 staff members, the faculty also invites many full-time visiting instructors from international partner institutions. Ten research centers are operated by the faculty, which is especially devoted to the areas of international economics, health economics, and environmental economics.

    Chulalongkorn University’s College of Population Studies plays a central role in the research of population in Thailand. It conducts studies not only on demography in the narrow sense, but also on a wide range of population topics, including family research, welfare regimes, international migration, and health.
    Because Chulalongkorn University is a core institution in the ASEAN region, it is a hub of exchange of ASEAN researchers and other human resources. The ASEAN Studies Center is also established within the university, with which population researchers are also associated. Prominent international researchers include ex-University Vice President Kua Wongboonsin and Professors Patcharawalai Wongboonsin and John Knodel.

Thammasat University

  • [Pridi Banomyong International College]
    Thammasat University’s Pridi Banomyong International College is a young department, established in 2008. It offers four programs: Thai Studies, Chinese Studies, Indian Studies, and ASEAN Studies (master’s program). Of these programs, Kyoto University’s Graduate School of Economics has a major relationship with PBIC’s ASEAN Studies program. Kyoto University is strengthening graduate student exchanges and cooperative ties with PBIC’s faculty members based on an academic exchange agreement. PBIC also emphasizes interdisciplinary educational programs and international cooperative relations. It has established an environment suited for the education and research of political science, economics, cultures, and languages in the Asian region, including China and India, countries with growing influence, while focusing primarily on ASEAN countries. While it does not have many full-time research staff members, besides faculty members from related departments, it also welcomes visiting researchers who are noted experts active in fields such as political science, economics and cultures.     Thammasat University’s Faculty of Economics has 75 scholars. Its offers Master of Arts in Economics, Master of Arts/PhD (English), Master of Business Economics, and the Thammasat International Trade Law and Economics as a graduate program. The university also offers an undergraduate program and an international program (BE, English) in economics. Kyoto University’s Graduate School of Economics has a major cooperative relationship with Thammasat University’s English economics program. As described below, Kyoto University is strengthening graduate student exchanges and cooperative ties with faculty members based on an academic exchange agreement. In addition to the Pridi Banomyong Library mentioned above, Thammasat University’s Puey Ungphakorn Economics Library has 68,248 volumes (as of January 30, 2011).
    Thammasat University has a total of 26,417 bachelor’s degree students (79% of total students), 249 certificate students (1%), 6,516 master’s degree students (19%), and. 327 PhD students (1%). It has 1,742 faculty members, 1,348 academic supporting staff, 2,327 administrative staff, and 1,041 other employees

Chiang Mai University

  • [RIHES]
    Chiang Mai University’s Research Institute for Health Sciences (RIHES) is composed of three buildings. With 87 full-time researchers and 139 part-time staff supported by both internal and external funding, the institute also has clinical testing and specimen processing labs that bolster clinical and epidemiological research and a center that handles administration, data management and fieldwork. Its primary source of external funding is the U.S. National Institutes of Health, from which it obtains 2.2 million U.S. dollars annually for clinical research and vaccination experiments.

Mahidol University

    Mahidol University’s Institute of Population and Social Research (IPSR) has 32 full-time researchers, including specialists in sociology, demographics, reproductive health, and program assessment who are active in international organizations. Besides research grants from the Thai government, major sources of external funding include a variety of international agencies (Global Fund, Rockefeller Foundation, WHO, UNICEF, UNDP, UNFPA、UNAIDS, and Toyota Foundation).

Kasetsart University

  • Last year, Kasetsart University was ranked second among Asian universities in the field of agriculture, after Kyoto University. Besides two agricultural departments in the city of Bangkok and Nakhon Pathom Province, the university also has forestry, fishery, and agro-industry departments. The economics department also focuses its research on agricultural economics. The university has vast experimental farms on its campus in Nakhon Pathom Province and in Nakhon Ratchasima Province, a number of research forests in different regions, including Nakhon Ratchasima Province, and a marine research center in Chonburi Province. The university has its central research labs on two campuses where advanced research equipment are concentrated and managed.

Gadjah Mada University

  • Gadjah Mada University is Indonesia’s largest comprehensive university. It has 18 departments, 73 departmental programs, 62 graduate school programs, and 28 research centers, with about 52,000 students and about 4,500 faculty & staff members. Kyoto University’s Graduate School of Economics has an exchange agreement with Gadjah Mada University’s Faculty of Economics and Business. About 5,500 students are enrolled in the faculty’s Economics, Management, and Accounting Departments, which have about 200 faculty members. Because the faculty is a large establishment, Kyoto University is especially strengthening ties with its master’s program in economic development (MEP: Master of Economic Development, 68 faculty members). The university’s primary collaborative researcher is a faculty member in the Management Department who is responsible for international exchanges. Much of external funding is obtained from the private sector, including financial institutions. A feature of the faculty is that many research facilities are established within the departments. The library has a full lineup of electronic journals, and the faculty publishes three bulletins. The faculty also has an international section, which is actively engaged in the internationalization of educational and research activities. It is also devoting energy to information education, language education, and professional education.

Bogor Agricultural University

  • Bogor Agricultural University’s agriculture, life sciences, and agricultural engineering departments are not only the best in Indonesia, they are also considered one of the leading institutions in Southeast Asia. A great number of universities conduct joint research with Bogor Agricultural University’s agricultural and forestry departments, as well as its life sciences department. It has experimental farms and research forests nationwide. Its Darmaga campus contains many advanced research equipment.

Universitas Syiah Kuala

  • Universitas Syiah Kuala’s Tsunami and Disaster Mitigation Research Center (TDMRC) was established in 2006 in Aceh Province, Indonesia, the area most heavily damaged by the Sumatra-Andaman earthquake in 2004. The center has steadily grown to become an international research organization that carries out multidisciplinary disaster prevention education and research. As an disaster prevention educational and research institution integrating the humanities and sciences in Indonesia, where many disasters occur, it not only conducts international collaborative research with universities and research organizations in countries with advanced disaster prevention experience, including Japan, it also seeks to be research center for South-South cooperation in disaster prevention.

Royal University of Phnom Penh

  • Royal University of Phnom Penh is Cambodia’s top university. It carries out comprehensive education and research in the natural and social sciences. It employs about 420 full-time faculty members and about 140 administrative staff, and offers undergraduate and graduate education to more than 18,000 students. Because Cambodia had experienced a quarter century of civil war until the early 1990s, “development” is the most pressing social demand from the people. Thus, the Royal University of Phnom Penh decided to establish a PhD program in developmental studies in 2006 and a faculty of developmental studies in 2013, to which 42 faculty members are currently assigned. Many members of the faculty are young instructors who just earned their PhD or master’s degree from international research and educational institutions. The university plays an important role as Cambodia’s core institution for nurturing human resources who contribute to the development of the country from here on. It has a record of achievements for its educational and research programs carried out in collaboration with Nagoya University (Japan), New York University (U.S.), RMIT University (Australia), Massey University (New Zealand), and the University of Bradford (U.K.). While the university’s own research funding is lacking, by taking an interdisciplinary and comprehensive approach to the subject of development, it is a fit partner in an international research network that lays the foundation for innovative humanosphere research.

Hanoi University of Science and Technology

  • The Hanoi University of Science and Technology’s School of Environmental Science and Technology is composed of five departments: the Environmental Engineering Department, Environmental Management Department, Environmental Technology Research and Development Laboratory, Vietnam Cleaner Production Center, and the Center for Industrial Environmental Monitoring and Pollution Control. The school has 72 employees, including six professors or associate professors and 14 staff members with PhD. About 60 undergraduates, 30 master’s degree students, and several PhD students are enrolled annually in the Environmental Engineering Department and Environmental Management Department. The school boasts the country’s most advanced facilities and human resources in environmental analysis. In addition to facilities capable of general water quality analysis (pH, dissolved oxygen, settleable solids, biochemical oxygen demand, chemical oxygen demand, total nitrogen, total phosphorus, etc.), the school also has multiple advanced analytic equipment (gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry, high-performance liquid chromatography, etc.). It is expected to the core organization connecting numerous other organizations in tackling urban issues.

Ateneo de Manila University

  • Established in 1859 and having more than 150 years of history, Ateneo de Manila University is a comprehensive university and one of the Philippine’s top private universities. It has an extremely desirable research environment with a wealth of research staff, books, and materials in Philippine studies.

University of the Philippines

  • Established in 1955, the University of the Philippines’s Asian Center is a graduate education organization in Asian studies and related fields. Besides the Philippines, its area of study geographically encompasses the whole of Southeast Asia, Japan, China, North and South Korea, and West Asia. It features a collaborative network with public and private-sector organizations both domestically and internationally. With these cooperative relationships, it carries out a variety of conferences and events. Internationally prominent researchers include former-Director Carolyn Sobritchea, who is deeply involved in United Nations gender policy and is well-known even in Japan. A number of Japanese students have been accepted to its graduate school, and it has a track performance of cultivating young researchers who are demonstrating leadership in Southeast Asian studies.

University Sains Malaysia

  • Established as the second university in the country in 1969, Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) was first known as Universiti Pulau Pinang. USM offers courses ranging from Natural Sciences, Applied Sciences, Medical and Health Sciences, Pharmaceutical Sciences to Building Science and Technology, Social Sciences, Humanities, and Education. These are available at undergraduate and postgraduate levels to approximately 30,000 students at its 17 Academic Schools on the main campus in the island of Penang. In 2008, USM became the first university in the country to be selected by the Malaysian government to participate in the Accelerated Programme for Excellence (APEX), a fast-track programme that helps tertiary institutions achieve world-class status.

Asian School of the Environment, Nanyang Technological University

  • The Asian School of the Environment (ASE) at NTU is a new interdisciplinary School that will be a world leader in environmental research focused on Asian environmental challenges. The ASE integrates earth and environmental life science, ecology, engineering and technology, human ecology, humanities, and the social sciences to address key issues of the environment and sustainability. The School offers a Ph.D. in Earth Sciences, a Bachelor of Science degree in Environmental Earth Systems Science, and a minor open to all students at NTU in Environmental Sustainability.
