Kyoto University is delighted to announce that the 14th International Conference on Digital Preservation (iPRES) will take place from September 25th (Mon.) to 29th (Fri.), 2017 in Kyoto, Japan.
The iPRES 2017 hosted by Kyoto University will contribute to promotion of researches and development of technologies and services of digital preservation. Like previous iPRES conferences, iPRES 2017 will serve as an international forum for the global community of digital preservation, and, in particular, it will contribute to Japanese and Asian communities of digital preservation.
The main objectives at iPRES 2017 will be cultural resources in various domains and from various viewpoints. Academic societies in the areas of digital humanities and information resource management are the main communities to support this conference in Japan. This conference will be organized in collaboration with major memory institutions in Japan.
Kyoto University has strong relationships with Asian countries through their area research activities, which will add new features to the iPRES conference series.
The theme of the coming conference is: Keeping Cultural Diversity for the Future in the Digital Space — From Pop Culture to Scholarly Information.
We invite contributions that present original work about research initiatives and innovative practices in digital preservation and expect that the contributions will be
- Leading edge
- Innovative
- Effective in informing and promoting the digital preservation debates.
The conference program will be structured around two key strands – research and innovative practice. Contributions are invited for both strands.
Contribution topics
We welcome contributions that address at least one of the following topics:
- Institutional challenges, infrastructure (organizational and technological) opportunities and challenges, lessons learned
- Frameworks for digital preservation, their implementation, institutional integration and evaluation
- Novel preservation strategies, preservation planning, workflows and tools for
- Digital art conservation (conceptual and practical)
- Games preservation
- Web preservation
- Social media
- Training and education, case studies, best practices and novel challenges
- Research data preservation
- Characterization, preservation and curation of large (heterogeneous) data sets
- Modeling and description of scientific processes and context, engineering models and simulations
- Risk models, dependency management
- Scalable preservation, service business models
All submissions will be subject to a peer review. Those that are accepted for inclusion in the conference programme will be published in the iPRES 2017 proceedings.
Submission types
All submissions must be original contributions and not previously published nor currently under consideration for publication elsewhere. All papers must be written in English. Submissions of all types must be made in PDF format using the ACM sigconf template for Word and LaTeX http://www.acm.org/publications/article-templates/proceedings-template.html. Submissions should be made through EasyChair conference management system. All accepted submissions will be published in the conference proceedings (in digital form).
Full paper
Full papers should be 8 to 10 pages and follow the guidelines for authors, supported by the provided template. Full papers will report significant and original results relevant to the scope of iPRES 2017. All full papers will be peer-reviewed by at least 3 members of the Program Committee.
Short paper
Short papers should be 3 to 5 pages and follow the guidelines for authors, supported by the provided template. Short papers will report new challenges and work in progress relevant to the scope of iPRES 2017. All short paper will be peer-reviewed by at least 3 members of the Program Committee.
Poster/demo
Submissions (abstract up to 2 pages) are encouraged for posters/demos reporting on emerging issues, work in progress, or demonstrations of innovative solutions. These submissions should clearly describe the topic to be presented and state its unique contribution to the field. All posters/demos will be peer-reviewed by the Program Committee Chairs. The accepted posters/demos will be displayed for the entire duration of the conference and presented to the conference participants during the poster exhibition.
No need to upload Poster PDF in the submission phase. Only the extended abstract in ACM format is needed for submission.
Panel
Proposals (abstract up to 2 pages) for thematic panels should be submitted by 3 to 5 experts. The panels will be held during the main conference program. Panel proposals must include short bios of the panelists and the facilitators. Acceptance will be judged on the merits of the proposal and relevance for the expected audience. Proposals must detail the subject, motivation and panelists. All submissions will be peer-reviewed by the Program Committee Chairs.
Workshop
Proposals for thematic workshops (abstract up to 2 pages) are welcome. Proposals must detail the subject, scope, program strand and intended content. As a rule, a workshop should be planned for half a day (3 hours). Acceptance will be based on the merits of the proposal and the requirements for its organization. All submissions will be peer-reviewed by the Workshop and Tutorial Chairs.
Tutorial
Proposals for tutorials (abstract up to 2 pages) should focus on a single topic and designate whether it aims at an introductory level or an expert level. As a rule, a tutorial should be planned for half a day (3 hours). A proposal should include a brief summary, content outline, description of the intended audience and expected learning outcomes. All submissions will be peer-reviewed by the Workshop and Tutorial Chairs.
