New Migrants and the Revival of Overseas Chinese Nationalism: The Southeast Asian Experience Revisited
  4. 概 要:
Emerging at the turn of the 20th century, overseas Chinese nationalism played an important part in the evolution of the Chinese communities in Southeast Asia and, to a lesser extent, the modern history of the region. It is widely held that overseas Chinese nationalism had died out by the 1950s, when the China-centered allegiance of the huaqiao (overseas Chinese) was replaced by a local-oriented identity. The fundamental change of the Chinese Diaspora communities over the last two decades, however, has put this conventional wisdom into contestation. This paper is concerned with how the xin yinmin (new migrants, or xin huaqiao) have engineered the resurgence of Overseas Chinese nationalism since 1980 and the similarities/divergences with its historical precedent.
This paper is divided into two sections. The first is empirical, examining the rise, demography, and characteristics of the new migrants, who have concentrated in the West, Japan, and Singapore and are composed of four main types: student-turned-immigrants, emigrating professionals, chain migrants, and illegal immigrants. The second section is more conceptual and comparative, looking at the dynamics and manifestations of a reviving Overseas Chinese nationalism and placing them within a historical perspective. I will focus on the issues of (extra)territoriality, organization and leadership, internal coherence, as well as the embedded tensions between nationalism and transnationalism. The paper concludes with preliminary observations on the theoretical/policy ramifications of this emerging nationalism and on an understanding of the Southeast Asian experience.

Power and Business: Chinese Business Networks in the Penang-Kedah Axis, 1880s-1910s
  6. 概 要:
By focusing on the Penang Lim family and Kedah Choong family, in this presentation, Chinese business networks and power relationship are contextualized in the process of economic change and political integration, such as the British consulate, opium farm, and Chinese disturbance. The activities of these two families illustrate two patterns of Chinese business expansion: from Penang to Kedah in the case of the Lim family and from Kedah to Penang in the case of the Choong family. In examining the historical cross-border interactions, the history of Chinese business networks was illustrated as a miniature of local and regional history.
