Global Migrations and Historical as well as Contemporary Social Transformations

研究テーマ

My research project as a Visiting Research Fellow at the CSEAS, Kyoto University, is to put together a book manuscript on Philippine global migrations. The proposed book will offer an analysis of the migrations of Filipinas and Filipinos in relation to issues of nationhood, identity, citizenship, and the state. Several papers that I had previously published will be updated, reorganized, and rewritten as part of the book project. Additional papers will also be written.

One paper that I will write will seek to conceptualize contemporary transnational migrations in the context of East and Southeast Asia. Most works on this topic focus on North America, with transnational migrants coming from Mexico, the Caribbean, and other points of origin in Latin America. Focusing on transnational migrations within East and Southeast Asia will yield different issues, dynamics, and parameters that may help in rethinking the concept of transnationalism.

Another paper that I am working on is the citizenship of ethnic Chinese migrants to the Philippines during the American colonial period, roughly the first half of the twentieth century. During this period, amid the application of the Chinese Exclusion Law (first promulgated in the U.S. in the 1880s) to the Philippines, Chinese in the Philippines initially had relatively good access to citizenship through jus soli. But the advent of the Philippine Commonwealth in the 1930s saw Filipino racial prejudice advancing the adoption of jus sanguinis. This paper aims to highlight the contradictions of this historical development.
