Soil-Crop Systems Modeling/Decision Support Systems, Impacts of climate change on agricultural systems with simulation models

研究テーマ

1. Applications of simulation models in supporting decisions related to climate change adaptation in agricultural systems
2. Long-term monitoring of rice-based cropping systems in Northern Thailand.

Climate change, due partly to changes of greenhouse gases, in terms of increasing temperatures, more events of extreme floods and droughts, loss of productive lowland and upland ecosystems, and rising public concerns further compounds these issues. This poses a great challenge for agricultural scientists, policy makers and farmers. The provisions of alternative and practical solutions in both space and time can be visualized with the application of validated process-oriented simulation models. Long-term monitoring and data collection of rice-based cropping systems will provide understanding and reliable data set to predict how climate and weather influence performance of production systems, which is the part where agricultural scientists do best. Policy makers, then, can ask a series of 'what if' questions, using validated models, of various production agroecosystems. Through such collective efforts of scientists and policy makers, then, sound policies can be formulated for the benefits of farmers in various agroecosystems.
