Since 1975, CSEAS has established a visiting scholar program to promote research activities in and on the region by distinguished scholars. Over 300 scholars—many of them leading researchers in their respective fields–have availed themselves of the Center’s considerable scholarly resources and enjoyed the invigorating atmosphere of scenic Kyoto, the ancient capital of Japan and the main repository of the country’s cultural treasures, to pursue their interests in Southeast Asian studies. CSEAS has provided many visiting scholars not only with opportunities for the exchange of ideas with Japan-based and other scholars, but also a research environment that nurtures pathbreaking, multidisciplinary research. CSEAS is an ideal place for writing and for sharing comparative, historical, and global perspectives on Southeast Asia. At first, CSEAS mainly focused on inviting scholars mainly from Southeast Asian countries. However in recent years, CSEAS has opened up applications to scholars who can produce world-class research from all over the world.
Positions for scholars visiting CSEAS are divided into five categories: Visiting Research Scholars; Guest Scholars; Guest Research Associate; Special Researchers; and Short-term International Student.
Calls for applications to each of these programs are announced each year on CSEAS’s homepage alongside announcements sent out to leading research institutions. For the Visiting Research Fellow program, 12 scholars are chosen annually on a competitive basis. Scholars can stay for up to 6 months. At present, we receive applications from Southeast Asia, as well as South Asia, China, Korea, Taiwan, the U.S., and Europe. Applicants are not limited to scholars: CSEAS has hosted government officials, journalists, librarians, NGO workers, IT specialists and other professionals on short-term visits. For those who are successful in their applications, CSEAS covers transportation costs to Kyoto, along with a monthly stipend. A member of the CSEAS staff also acts as a counterpart to facilitate collaborative research during the duration of the scholar’s stay. While in Kyoto scholars are strongly encouraged to participate in the CSEAS conferences, seminars, and workshops, and submit articles to the Center’s flagship journal Southeast Asian Studies, the Kyoto Review of Southeast Asia and CSEAS biannual Newsletter. For more details on how to apply please see the opportunities page.
Apart from the fellowship program, CSEAS offers affiliation to scholars—both Japanese and international—who receive scholarships or funding from the Japanese Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS), or the Nippon Foundation Fellowships for Asian Public Intellectuals (API) as visiting researchers or guest scholars. Furthermore, CSEAS also accepts international students on short-term visits to Japan and offers them the use of research rooms and our library facilities. Scholars who are members of the JSPS Asian Core Program that CSEAS runs with its core partner institutions in East and Southeast Asia can also conduct short-term academic exchanges in CSEAS. CSEAS regularly organizes Get Together events where staff and visiting scholars can gather to exchange ideas in an informal setting.
Below is a list of Scholars who have stayed at CSEAS since 2013 (the list does not include visits of a few days).
