In 2009, the Graduate School of Asian and African Area Studies (ASAFAS), set up a division of Global Area Studies. This arose out of a G-COE program “In Search of Sustainable Humanosphere in Asia and Africa”which ran at CSEAS between 2007-11. This division aims at offering courses on sustainable humanosphere, the Islamic world as well as East Asia and India. In particular, the course on sustainable humanosphere provides education which looks at economic development models which are not centered on those developed within temperate zones, but rather in the tropics, and focuses on the correlations between the geosphere, biosphere and human society. Two professors from CSEAS actively contribute to this course. In addition to this, we also provide faculty who offer academic thesis supervision and participation in other courses.
